I like to think of myself as an artist, but the ideas for my projects are yours. You tell me what you would like and I will make it for you to the best of my ability. I have made dozens of Canes with personality, hundreds of figures and decor to your liking and even a 14' bar for one couple. What do you have in mind? Drop me a line at Shortysshop@tampabay.rr.com or mail me a short message in the box below. You don't even have to give me you E dress if you want your privacy. Alaina's Toybox / Hope Chest When we were visiting in Georgia last year after my granddaughter was born my son asked if I could make her a toy box. She was 3 weeks old. Now she is five months and accumulating toys rapidly! Her momma asked; after the fact if I could make a box that she could grow into. Kind of like a future (Hope Chest). It made me think. In 15 years I will be 75 years old, if I make it that long. This might be the only thing my granddaughter may have in memory of me. So I am making it of "Old World" craftsmanship and hopefully by 2027 she won't think it's too weird. I know from my first granddaughter 10 years is like another civilization. Watch and see how I finish this up.
The DOC cane is done and delivered. Now back to Alaina's Toy Box/Hope Chest. No matter how hard I work this old fashion style of work is slow going!!
Thanks to everyone who has given me any feedback. If you would like to just drop me a line you can do so at Shortysshop@tampabay.rr.com or at the bottom of the estimates and comments page or just click here http://www.shortysoldworldwoodshop.com/id67.html and scroll down to the box at the bottom.
The pirate ship to the left of the
page was a request from a 7 year old boy as he was watching "Pirates of the Caribbean" I thought about my own childhood
and thought "Cool". I cut down the Chinese Tallow tree that had been bugging me and started peeling the bark off
the trunk! Results a Black Pearl bank. I hollowed it out and put a slot on the Hold lattice lid
for coins and pieces of eight. The flag in the rear or Stern as I am told lifts up and the Captains windows come out to plunder
the bank loot!
I
not only carve toys; but yard ornaments, wall hangings, signs and name plaques, sporting symbols, walking sticks and canes
and even special boxes and furniture. I have even repaired antique furniture. I know it looses value to a collector, but as
a keepsake it's invaluable! I love challenges and sometimes surprise myself! Many times the grain of the wood dictates
to me the end product. Mother nature has her own art!
Please take a look at some of my "Past Projects." The Cedar Swing is a Christmas present ordered by Richard for his wife. It is four feet long.
The box to the right is my Family Bible handed down from my Great Grandma Hirsch. Hirsch is German, as is the Bible written in Duetch, but she was full blooded Norwegian (Gulbraunson) who married
a full blooded German! My Great grandpa Friedrick Paul Hirsch came to this country in
1887 at fourteen, and became a wood carver / furniture maker in Des Moines. I think I may have
received some of his genes! I built this box out of Black Oak with dovetail joints. No nails or screws were used to make this air tight box for one of my grand daughters Allyson or Alaina in the future.
A wife of a marathon runner wanted to get a lamp depictiting a runner. She found golfer, fisherman, even a firefighter
but she came to Shorty's Shop for a carving of a runner. Check out my past projects page!
I was
asked if I could make a 6 foot tall totem pole now in Las Vegas. Becareful what you ask me for! Ya might get it!!!!!!
The clock is an odd collectors item! A German
made clock with Mandarin Chinese numerals now encased in an American made wooden setting! Some times I get confused!
I also do repairs on furniture, wooden
and many hand made items as well as forge and make knives. The picture on the left is a before and after type shot. I ordered
the small SPUR knife from Blind Horse Knives in Ohio. Then I made a larger handle so my stiff fingers could grasp it with
less effort while carving. American Steel with American Moose horn handle. The same horn was used to repair Marks Bowie Knife
on the right.
David had been out of the Army for several years when he was called back to his special forces outfit the 320 (A) SF He was a nurse in civilian life, but a medic for the most fearless soldiers in our history. When he told me he was going to Iraq and then Afghanistan I made him this knife. I know it sounds weird to most people, but a knife to a fighting man is the basics of a warrior. I just wanted to give him a reminder that we were thinking of him while he was on the other-side of the world !
Wood Spirit Mother Nature has her own art style. A wood spirit is already in the grain of the fibered material. All I have to do is uncover it.
The picture above was my first attempt of Polynesian art. Mat wanted the God of War "KU" to adorn his apartment in Hawaii He is going to take him around the Island and introduce him to the other gods! * * * Check out my friends Shop at Art in Photography Saint Karmas Dog Rescue & Adoption http://www.arttophotography.com/index.php?splash=1 Blind Horse Knives http://www.blindhorseknives.com/index.htm Nature Coast Woodcarvers Club http://naturecoast.clubspaces.com/
The
picture to the right is my first attempt of BOSTON Pop art. I am not sure if these are worship idols or what, but my supervisor
Lou thought I had some magical powers when both of these teams won the championships the year I made these! I ain't telling
him anything different!
