The Spine Aline cane is the second of the Spinal Column carvings I have done. This one is a little shorter, but basically the same. I don't normally duplicate projects, but technically one is a staff and the other is a cane. It is all one piece from a Black Cherry log I harvested in my back yard here in Florida. I used no glue, nails, or staples. It's all one continuous piece of wood. My daughter is a Nurse. I hope she doesn't want one too!
The wolf Head cane was requested by my son Eric. He is out of the Army now and is a Policeman. He was wounded in Iraq in 04 and still carries some souvenirs in his leg. Hopefully he won't need a cane anytime soon, but before my hands quit working he put in his order from Shorty's Shop. The fur texture goes all the way to the tip and is made of one piece Black Cherry wood. The tip has a wolf's paw and the rubber tip.
Welcome Home Sgt. Budd That statement is 43 years late, but at least I am saying with more than words. Sargent BUDD was a Medic with a Green Beret platoon during Viet Nam. The most admirable thing I can think of is a young man laying his life on the line for his country. The only thing more honorable would be the Medic who has to go through all the training that the infantry soldiers do, but the medical training before all of that is used. For a Special Forces squad that would be the ultimate soldier. Gary was not only a hero in the word, but he is one hell of a good person. The Maple log that this cane was made from was one of Gary's neighbors that he helped her cut up storm damage. This log was put on the curbside for trash pick-up, but his mail man found it first. That was the beginning of the SF Dragon cane. Again Gary; Thank you for being the man you are!
to the left: This is one of the canes made for the Wounded Warrior Program sponsored by the Nature Coast Carving club. We donate these canes and Patriotic Plaques to Wounded Vets coming back from Iraq & Afghanistan. Hopefully they will realize that we appreciate and respect their suffering and service! Below are some of my first and most recent canes and walking
sticks. They seem to be mainly reptilian, but that's what I started out with request. Some just like to collect canes, and
some actually use the device as an aide! I even use mine when ole Aurthur acts up in my knees and hips. I just like the looks
I get when I do use mine in public! Neat ice breakers and statement makers! What are your thoughts? I do not require
any payment till I near the finishing stage to make sure this is exactly what you want!
The Spinal Tap Staff ~ ~ This was requested by my nephew Brett! He is a fireman / EMT Tech in south Florida. When ha saw some of my work he asked if I could make something with a skull and spine about the size of a staff. He is a very good kid so this is a present for him to hang on his wal l and scare the hell out of all the visitors. My wife won't even let me bring it into the house! Hahaha The Glock cane was made for my old boss at the Post office. Victor may have some "Splainin to do" with this when the Inspectors come by. Haha This Eagle cane
I call the Freedom Cane. It is from the Black Cherry tree I removed this summer. I have no buyer or order for this piece.
I left a section raised on the shaft so who ever orders it can have their name or logo carved in relief and adjusted to height.

This staff is one of my first experiments. A five foot staff with a spiral 113 step pathway up to the Dragons Tooth. That is the torrid with a knife blade I forged and thus I came up with a name The Dragons Tooth! It is made of Hickory and weights about 6 lbs. The end of the staff has a dragons foot grasping a human skull. Weird? Yea I loved this, but it taught me a lot about detailing and technique. This was like my home schooling class , and thanks to Mark S.it made me realize others liked my work enough to market it to the public.
The horse cane is my own personal aide! When my
joints get cobbled up I use my Red-horse Squadron 554th stick.
Jamie had to come back after a week of using his cane and have it shortened one inch. This shot was snapped just before he left a happy camper!
I loved creating this cane even though Jamie told
me exactly what he wanted. Two nearly extinct Florida animals; the Red Wolf and the Sand hill Crane. _____________________________________________________________
Dr. Dale is a good friend of mine;a retired Col. and Medical Dr. He has some back trouble and I asked if he would use a cane if I made him one. He gave me the history of the Greek Medical Symbol and what you see him with was my interpretation of that history! The center picture is an experiment in texture in carving. I call it my Drag-on Stic, because it weighs about 9lbs. The staff on the right was one of my first experiments of circular relief carving. This was my start of artistic niche.
The ( Check Mate) cane
is my favorite piece. I started with a maple log about 5" across and drew out an idea in my mind! The first cut
is important due to the grain of the wood and any knots that will effect the structural strength of the finished piece!
The manatee cane was carved from the Black Cherry tree. I donated it to the raffle held at ourwood carvers show for a charitable organization
The Dolphin and Mermaid
cane was my favorite creation. It also was from the Chinese Tallow tree and the first piece I ever worked with this wood!
The very fine grain and pure white wood made it a pleasure to work. I try to; number one try to tell a story with the features
in the carving. Second I attempt to make it a useful piece! The Dolphin and Mermaid spiraled around each other rather than
a shaft, but it felt very comfortable and balanced!
The Grizzly cane was a gift order for one Canadians
dad!
He didn't have a special-theme in mind so I took some silly logic and this is what I came up with. On the back side of
this picture he wanted his dads name carved into the shaft!
This piece only took 17 hrs of actual work.
This is the second Flamingo cane I have made. The first went to Arizona; perched in a coconut tree. This one was named Pinky by the owners daughter who ordered this for her mom before her knee surgery. It got there in time before the surgery!
I had another Flamingo lover who want her
own bird in Indiana. Lenard ordered this Grizzly cane
for his Dad Vern way up in BritishColumbiaCANADA. The
Grizzly Cane was one of those Projects that was fun
The bear almost looked like a Yogi Bear as I was carving it!
For those under 45 Yogi was a cartoon!
The Polar Bear was a request from Vicki for her husband. What does a guy in Florida know about Polar Bears. For that matter; how often do you see a Polar Bear in Kansas! Tim got his Polar Bear, but I don't think he liked the comment about guys in Kansas. Doug is a very good friend of mine that has had one too many mishaps on his Harley's! He asked if I could make a cane for him with a biker chick on it. I tried to copy the build of his Super Glide and one of the girls on it! He is known as "BOSSMAN" and loves Harley's. This is what I came up with!
The man holding the Eagle head to the right is Eugene! He wanted an Eagle, specifically Bald Eagle. When I went to his home I realized I was talking to an Eagle lover. Everything he owns is an Eagle, except his car! Fire Bird! When Michael saw Eugene's he said he wants one just like it! I don't use patterns and every piece is a unique, because of the wood, but it is very similar. They both were happy so I did OK!
The Red Horse cane was a tribute to my Old First SGT from the
Air force. I don't mean old in a disrespectful way Bob!
This is supposed to be a Magical
Wand but regardless if it is just a whimsical
request or a real piece for effect I still try to put as much as I can into the item! Below is the tail angle! The request was for a 14 -16 inch wand. I just put a little twist to it,
or actually the tail. If you grab it just
behind the wings at 15" the tail will wrap around your arm as though it is hanging on to your arm!

Below is a cane that a man ordered for his girlfriend.
The Mermaid and Manatee carving
is from the heart of our Long Leaf Pine tree here in Florida. The finish you see is just rubbed. 150 years ago they use to tap these trees to make turpentine and shellac! The wood is just like resin and almost impervious! The
walking stick is for walking in the dunes at St. Joseph's or
support when leaving Sloppy Joe's. Aunt Porgie was tickled with it! It
has a manatee, mermaid, dolphin and a sea shell! To the right is a walking stick my wife's aunt
requested. She said she wanted a Palm Tree. Well I threw in the rest of Florida with it.
The Cowboy Cane. This is a piece I made of Cypress.
You Yankees don't have any up there so I will send you some! It works much like Cedar, but a little lighter. Originaly
I started this with White Oak, but the grain wouldn't let me do what I had in mind! The barbed wire is not wire
at all! I carved it in relief as I planed down the shaft! Terry sent me a picture of himself at his new home in
Oregon. If you ever worked with livestock you can appreciate the need for a little support in your Golden Years! Get ready
Terry Here they come.
The Destroyer Stic the (USS Epperson) and
the Cactus Fower actually went to the same house hold in Las Vegas. I hope you both enjoy them,
but if there is a problem I guess I will have to do to Vegas and fix them
for you! That's dedication Huh?
My wife, Jill helped me greatly with the Flamingo!
She did all the painting on the bird and coconut tree.
With my color vision I might have had green feathers
and red palm ferns.
The cane above to the left is for Uncle Gene. He served on this "Tin Can", but it looked like a boat to me. Aunt Georgie wanted something to go with her Nevada life style so I made he a Cactus cane. Some times I would like to see some one actually use the canes, but with the exception of one; the EMT cane I think they all end up in a collection. I am going to make me one cause I am beginning to need one!
The Peace Maker Colt .45 cane was a Birthday
present for Johnnie in Florida. He uses a cane and his daughter said he likes "Olde West" guns and knives This cane
was fun for me to make, because I kept thinking if I do well this retired Preacher is going to be arrested when he goes into
Wall Mart next time! I'll
have to get with him when I get my forge built! I also love to make knives

The strange figurine is what the carvers refer
as a wood spirit!
Truthfully it is exactly that! I hardly remember doing anything to the cedar log, and there are stories about the building my shop is in may be haunted. I never even had an idea for this piece. It was just there! Now if I can get the ghost to help sand! Maybe I should write TAPS to help train him. I have built a lot of the cabinets and furniture in our home. We have a L shaped computer table & drawers. Next to it a Printer table and a pull out work desk and five drawer filecabinet under the whole thing. It's all made of solid Oak pallets that were to be thrown away and burned. Recycling? No just cheap materials! haha
The "movie library" above the computer is
#2 white pine, or ponderosa pine as Lowe's Lumber calls it. All of our kitchen cabinets china cabinet; and the wife's
cook book, book shelves are all pine. I had a nephew tell me that our place looks like a cabin in the woods, and started
to apologize immediately when I told him thats what I hoped for! It just goes to show you almost every wood is beautiful if
it's finished right, and it doesn't have to come from an endangered spices on the other side of the world to be beautiful!
