I always have something to do all year round. Our Nature Coast Carvers Club donates items to the Veterans, for our annual show in December, and just to practice new techniques. These three pictures are Christmas Tree decorations for door prizes.
The bookshelf was ordered for my newest granddaughter before she was born. The mermaid was for my Ocean loving wife on out 33 anniversary. The Sea Horse; below, was a birthday present for my youngest son Jason. I won a ribbon at the citrus Co Wood carving competition for this also. The Angel was a birthday present for Lorraine with her humming bird collection.
Iowa State Logo for an Alumni in Ames
Above are two nic-nac shelves ordered to match the table I reconditioned for Terry below. (top right) is a hmming bird loving angel for an avid angel collector! The photo is not the project as the frame was made for an oil painting for Stephanie in Georgia. The bookshelf below was for my mom in Des Moines. Solid Popalar wood.
Batman & Superman was ordered by Mark to boost his real estate sales. The Angel was a Christmas present for my daughter-in-law.
The angel and dolls were
created on request for Christmas presents. Batman and Superman were fun projects.
Both came from a Sycamore log, but finished completely different.
The sign is a logo that Phyllis already established in her business. She wanted me to carve the logo for display at her studio.
This is an example of REPAIR category. Terry wanted her display coffee table to match her new furniture in her new house. I replaced the legs with a set I turned in the shop, and stripped the entire table , stained it to match the color of existing furniture and suddenly a Contemporary White oak style became a Early American Pecan style table. Magic? No just 28 hours of work at Shorty's. The Apple picture frame was
a request form one of my Nieces. She had decorated her kitchen in Apples and asked if I could carve her an Apple! There ya
go. Be careful what you ask me for!
The Tikiman was sent to Hawaii! That's rich! A Polynesian Island God made in Florida. He stands 28" tall
and weighs in at 30 lbs. The Apple photo frame to the right is made from the same wood as the Tiki guy! Sycamore is a beautiful
material to work with.
This was an experiment in materials. The yellow pine
heart (Lager Knots) almost impervious to weather and sun. It is very hard, almost like an epoxy that has to be shaped, not
carved. The Grouper and Pins on the right are also from the Long Leaf Pine, but was still green after it blew down in hurricane
Charlie!
These three projects are all made from Sycamore. The Tiki man, Apple frame and name plate,
The round plaques below are black walnut and
finish out beautifully. My boss said that my making these before either season, brought his teams good luck last year!
These two shadow box frames were my wife's idea. She wanted to keep memories in one box of a particular outing. Since we almost always go to water we have a lot of shells and fossils! Our boys are now grown and moved, but when ever I look at this I remember the days!
The Shell above was one of my earliest experiments with Lager knots. The wood is so hard that even a sharp knife only makes a scratch in it.
The piece above is one of the pieces of art that Mother Nature had made! It is what is called a Lager Knot! A piece of yellow pine that is almost petrified. This knot is about the size of a soft ball and pretty much hollow. The gain of this knot struck me with the image of a dragon sleeping in a cave. At the edge of the opening looked like a little man peeking in. As I carved this I was thinking about one of my dearest friend named Dave. He was a medic for the 320th SFG #A and was in Afghanistan for his third deployment. I pictured one of our soldiers peeking in the cave and killing the dragon so we could live in peace again!
Maple is a very hard wood but makes a beautiful name plaque.
The grain of the wood makes a rich impressive appearance.
A guy named Red Dog from Michigan asked me
if I could make a magic wand! A dragon or a snake! The challenge struck me as interesting so I came up with this. I don't
know how the magic part worked? My Grand
daughter Ally wanted a horse barn; not a doll house, but a barn for all of her horses. Three stalls and a hay loft. I have
made accessories too like a coral and even a new horse.
These two pieces were a little different. Lynn asked
me to find a piece of wood and carve something I see in the grain. That's not as easy as it sounds, First of all she wanted
them for a garden out side exposed to the elements. That limited the wood to 4 species, but since I am not in California that
knocks it back to 3. I am using what they call Lager Knots from a Long leaf pine. The two should last for years. They won't
help your garden they just watch the weeds grow.
These were Christmas presents for my Brother-in-law and his wife in Texas. Doug paints airplanes for the USAF and his wife collect frogs. I enjoy doing these whimsical projects.
Marianne's husband is a Marathon enthusiast! She wanted a lamp made with a runner at the base! I am not an electrician, but I did a little in my younger days! This is my interpretation of what she told me she wanted!
The eagle below is a request from Eugene again. The world biggest eagle collector. He had a brass eagle mounted on a light fixture and asked if I could make a different base for it. You have to be careful when you ask me do do something with no restraints
The high chair was built by me in 1982. I had a hand rip saw, an electric drill and a jack plane. I was still doing masonry contracting and had not woodworking tools, but it is as strong as the day I built it for my son who is now 29. You may have read where
I said Mother Nature has her own art! This is
an example; a rose carved out of the heart of an old pine tree. All
I did was slim down the wood where the stem is.The
petals are the hard grain of the heart and the ages have removed the soft wood between! The flower looking thing was an experiment in my earlier days. Actually it was a lesson in observing mother natures art! I learned early to observe the grain of a piece
of wood and finish out what nature started!
Steve is an avid collector of antique clocks!
He brought me two clocks and asked if I could make a case for the German made Ship's Clock with Oriental numbers on it.
This clock was not in mint condition as far as the finish, so I didn't want to make something that looked like it was just
made in some Chinese factory. I added some character to the shape and this is what I came up with!
This strange looking boat to the right is a donation to a raffle for a children's organization. The asked for a mans jewelery box for things like keys and change! That was a tough one? What would a man feel comfortable having on his dresser. I call this "The Man Box". It's supposed to represent a row boat with a tarp on it and a set of oars under the tarp! Yea! Man Box! I hope the raffle goes well, and it was my pleasure!
Have
you ever wanted to get your kid something that just isn't out there for sale? Well! At Shorty's Shop you are dealing with
the worlds largest kid. David asked me if I could make a wand for his son Calvin, because he was into "Harry Potter."
I know this is not like Harry's wand in the movie, but much better! His dad said he loves it.
Georgia & Gene live in Vegas!
They wanted a totem pole for their back yard. I don't think the Indians of the south west had totem poles, but these Nevadians
do now. The Eagle at the top, Bear under him, The Wolf holding up the fat bear and a Beaver at the bottom!

******************** In the Beginning This is one of the first pieces I ever created back in 1982. It was all solid Birch wood, and crafted with hand tools. I did have an electric drill and a skill saw, but everything else was done by hand. I must have worked my fingers to the bone cause I only have nine fingers left! hahahahahaahah! The top picture is the finished assembly photo and the bottom two is after I finished it and Vicki set it up for her new baby. We were all broke back then and had very small homes. I made this to fit in their bedroom and created it to remove the rails and dresser at the end and it became a toddlers bed with a set of drawers and blanket storage drawers below the bed! The painting to the right is my wife's grandmother! I didn't paint the picture; that was done by Dean Rusk! All I did was make the frame to match the frame he painted into the portrait! See how her elbow and flowers seem to hang over the frame!
I send out a monthly news letter telling about new projects and happening in Shorty's Shop. If you would like to get these letters send me your email or address for a printed copy.

A little boy said he wanted a pirate ship so I cut down a Chinese Tallow
tree and started chiseling away. Thirty hours later Captian Jack was ready to sail!
In art pieces such as these each one will vary in price with size, material and extras added per request!
My wife said she wanted a boat
for her birthday so I found some drift wood and wrapped this up!
Prior to "Shorty's Shop I have sent gifts to friends all over the country. This stallion was a Christmas present to a friend of my wife who lives near DC. If you are one of these friends I would love to get a snap shot from you as I did not keep record of the pieces before! The wind mill was for Sue's Birthday She has a collection, but not a haunted wind mill!
Till now.
The Heron was pretty much an experiment when I started; you know, not sure what the final product would be, but it turned out better than I expected. This piece is carved from Chinese Tallow. One thing I have discovered that the Tallow wood is like a sponge and it soaks up and stain and becomes very rich looking! My wife liked it so it became her birthday present
The bunny and hollow egg were both hand carved and sent to DC area for Easter.
The Pipe Stand was finished towards the end of July. Tom wanted a 6 piper with a rustic look to enhance his antique pipe collection. The dark at the top of the stand is actually bark from the log of the Black Walnut tree. No varnish was used on this piece, just Tung Oil!
This is a shot of one of my BIGGEST challenges. The Barnes' Bar. They had bought the Chamfer slabs from Tom's Cypress Inc in Waldo Fl. Mrs Barnes had an idea of what she wanted and Mr. Barnes being an engineer came up with how to do it. My job was easy. I just did what they wanted! Truthfully! The bar was their concept. All I had to do it make their ideas come to life! I love it. I still have to go back and refinish the epoxy to. When it gets cold you shouldn't play with epoxy! |
